A little girl and her mother, were baking cookies for a sale
The mothers name was Cleo, her daughter’s name was Gail
Cleo was trying to teach, her little girl how to bake
First they would try the cookies and then try for cake
“What do we do first mommy?” Little Gail asked
Holding onto the bowl, firm within her grasp
“First we add the softened butter, 1 cup should do us fine
Unwrap the sticks and plop them in, sweet little girl of mine.”
“I got the butter mom, how much should I add?
Do I put in all 4 sticks or only just a tad?”
“Two sticks equals one cup, so add only two.”
The little girl liked butter so she added an extra few
Cleo looked at the wrappers and saw there were too many
“Oh honey, 1 cup is 2 sticks, this is more than plenty!”
Cleo reached a large spoon in and began to take some out
While little Gail was laughing, she began to dance about
Cleo measured out the butter and got the recipe back on track
Preheated their little oven to 350 and moved up the center rack
Gail pulled up a chair and heaved herself on top
Almost fell, so grabbed the bowl and it fell with a plop
The bowl and butter had all fallen to the floor
Little Gail became startled and hid behind the door
Peering out, she looked at her mom, with a frown upon her face
Pushed her bottom lip out and appeared to be disgraced
“It’s alright, it happens, we just have to pick it up.”
Cleo bent down and asked Gail to go rinse her little cup
Once the mess was cleaned up, they started on the next task
“What do we add in next mommy?” The little girl would ask
“Now we add the sugars, both brown and white
One cup of each, but the brown should be packed tight.”
Gail grabbed the measuring cup and headed straight for the bags
Grabbed both the baking ingredients, without looking at the tags
Gail made it to her chair and pulled herself up
Licked her little lips and reached for her cup
She began to add the ingredients, into her measuring dish
Dreaming about being a good baker, would be her only wish
“Gail, you need to be more careful, and I know it’s not your fault
But look at what you’re doing, because instead of sugar you added salt.”
Gail became embarrassed and her face appeared to become red
She giggled and smiled shyly at what her mother had just said
“It’s alright my little girl, we caught it just in time.”
Cleo smiled with her lips, with the gloss they did shine
“Now we cream the butter and the sugars all together
We want them nice and smooth, as light as a feather.”
Gail mixed and stirred as powerfully as she could
Started to sweat and got a sliver from the wood
“Ow, mom! The wooden spoon bit me on the hand.”
Gail yelped in pain and on the floor she did land
Gail cried and wailed until Cleo came to her aid
Kissed her little girl until the pain started to fade
“Come on my little sweet girl, it’s time to get up
Dust yourself off and let’s go get the cup.”
Gail waited for her mom to give her the next thing to do
She reached her little finger in the bowl and then started to chew
“Okay, now it’s time to add the 2 eggs.”
Gail sat upon the chair and pushed up with her legs
Trying to stand tall, and be big enough to see
She peered into the bowl with a look of blessed glee
“I will crack these in the bowl, adding one at a time
I want you to take the vanilla and fill 2 teaspoons to the line.”
Gail grabbed the vanilla extract and opened the lid with care
Started pouring it into the spoon finishing with “There!”
The little girl bit her lip and began to squeeze and pour
Until the black liquid spilled all over the counter and soon onto the floor
“That’s too much little one. Now go and get the mop.”
Mom grabbed a kitchen towel and threw it down with a sop
“Here it is momma, sorry for the mess!”
The little girl said as she looked at her wet dress
“It’s okay it happens, we just need to be more careful.”
Momma said to her little girl, almost appearing prayerful
Cleo sighed and asked Gail to get the baking soda
“All we need is 1 teaspoon to make it to our quota.”
“Dissolve the baking soda into 2 teaspoons of hot water
And if I haven’t told you lately, I’m proud of you as my daughter.”
Gail looked at her mom, and smiled from ear to ear
Gave out a little giggle with the element of cheer
“I want to add it all in, mix it in the batter.”
Gail said to her mom in her friendly little chatter
“We also need to add in ½ teaspoon salt into the mix
Stick with me little one and I will teach you all these baking tricks.”
Gail started stirring and mixing all the stuff
Much of it flung out and mom gave a little huff
Momma let out a breath as she looked at the hour
Looked at her little girl and said “It’s time to add the flour.”
“I’ll get my cup mom.” Gail stated trying to be nice
“Fill it up my dear, level it off, not once but thrice.”
The little girl smiled and went to pick up her cup
Pulled up upon the chair and hoisted herself up
She took the cup and began to spoon some in
Trying to be careful, smiling with a grin
The flour spilled and made snow in the air
The little girl shrugged and went her way without a care
She picked up the cup and began to start again
“It’s fine mom, I’ll do better, but you have to tell me when.”
Mom looked over as to monitor her little girl
Smiled and nodded at her and made her finger do a twirl
“That’s enough, now add that to the bowl
We still have some things to add, if we want to reach our goal.”
“Don’t add it just yet, we need to add the 2 cups chocolate chips
Let’s get another bowl and give them all a real good mix.”
Gail mixed the flour and the chocolate chips together
“Momma this is getting hard, it’s no longer light like a feather.”
Cleo went to take over to give her daughter a rest
Thought about the cookies, knowing they’d be the best
Before she could arrive, the mixture splattered all over the counter top
Little Gail smiled and giggled saying “I guess I’ll get the mop.”
Momma didn’t want to clean up yet another mess
This was turning out to be causing her distress
She smiled at her little girl, seeing how happy that she was
Shook her head with a sigh, not wanting to make a fuss
“It’s time to stir again my little darling lass,
Use all your little muscles, but this time don’t stir so fast.”
Little Gail stirred and asked about the 1 cup of nuts
Asked if they were optional or if there were any buts
Cleo said that they could add them if she liked them so
Gail picked up the big bowl but her fingers had let go
Both little Gail and the bowl of batter went crashing to the ground
Batter was on the ceiling, on the walls, and all over to be found
Momma sat with her little girl crying on the floor
“It’s alright honey, we’ll just go back to the store.”
