It was early in the morning when dawn began to shine through
The little darling began to wake with hopes of visiting the zoo
She jumped out of her little comfy bed and went to wake her mom and dad
Dad thought the abrupt awakening was about a nightmare she had
“Daddy, daddy, I want to go to the zoo!” Little Kimmy exclaimed as she jumped into daddy’s arms
“Okay, okay, we can go one day soon,” Dad said quietly, trying not to raise an alarm
“I would like to see the lions, the penguins, and the giraffes.”
Little Kimmy sounded so excited as she began to giggle and laugh
Daddy picked up his little girl and gave her a kiss on the cheek
“Today I’m much too busy, but let’s make a plan to go next week.”
Little Kimmy frowned and began to shed a tear.
“I can’t wait that long, dad; that’s almost one whole year!”
“I’m sorry, my little sweetheart, but I’ve got some work to do
But next weekend will come soon, and then we’ll go to the zoo.”
Daddy filled his coffee mug and asked Little Kimmy to play in her room
“But I want to go see the animals today, and I want a red balloon.”
Little Kimmy stomped on the floor and began to walk away
She was disappointed that she would not be going to the zoo that day
She walked sadly to her room, jumped on her bed with a huff
Feeling like life as a little girl was really getting tough
She had an idea as she looked at her window to sneak out
For then, she could see the animals and freely walk about
She grabbed her little purse and hat and some of her stuffed animals too
Little Kimmy seemed almost ready to take a trip to the zoo
She walked along the sidewalk, pretending to belong
Looked back at her yellow house, waved, and said, “So long.”
She arrived at her destination, with awe filling her hazel eyes
She became excited as she looked at all the animals that she now did spy
“Look, the polar bears! They’re playing with their ball!”
She ran over to take a closer look, beginning to feel small
“You’re so big with your fluffy white fur, Mr. Bear, I have to ask.
Would you like to come and have tea with me, be up for the task?”
The polar bear smiled but went on his way to take his afternoon sleep
She was a little disappointed but chose not to make a peep
Little Kimmy went on her way, walked to a cage with tigers being fed
Decided it was a little too gruesome, so went to see the monkeys instead
The monkeys were having so much fun and hanging on all the trees
Suddenly out came a banana peel and hit Little Kimmy’s knees
“Hey, you little rascal!” Little Kimmy spat
Looking around, she remembered where she was at
She yawned and stretched and thought of the peacock with his lovely plume
She moved slowly around her play things; you see, she never left her room
She looked at all her stuffed animals and all her little dolls
Thankful for her imagination, for creating the zoo within her walls
She will always recall that special time, which no one ever knew
The day that Little Kimmy went exploring at the zoo
