Two Little Girls

Once upon an afternoon day,
in the spring month of early May
Two little girls began to play,
outside in the sun during the day

They picked little purple flowers,
even during the big rain showers,
Sticks became wands with powers,
pretending to be maidens locked in towers

Small giggles filled the air,
breeze billowed through their hair
They twirled around without a care,
horse-riding on a pretend mare

“I’m a true princess.” One of the little girls said,
as she straightened the crown upon her head

“I’m a beautiful enchantress.” Her companion spoke with a laugh,
While grabbing her large stick, pretending it was a magic staff

They grabbed each other’s hands,
held tight together like soldered bands
spinning with their toes in the sands,
their hair floating, all the strands

The dinner bell rang,
as they played and sang
so they ran home with a spring,
to soften their little hunger pang

Momma came into sight,
as the girls took their little flight
going as fast as a wind-blown kite,
laughing and twittering with all their might

“I’m sorry your play had to come to an end.”
Mother said as she started to bend
Kissed her daughter but not her friend,
for there was only one little girl, the other pretend.
